Aaron Donald was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 23, 1991 to a working-class family in the Lincoln-Lemington-Belmar district. Donald attended Penn Hills High School as a teenager, where he played football. Donald has 63 tackles and 11 sacks his final year.

Donald committed to the University of Pittsburgh after turning down scholarships from Akron, Rutgers, and Toledo. As a freshman with the Pittsburgh Panthers, he appeared in all 13 regular-season games as a backup defensive end, recording 11 tackles. Donald then had a breakout season as a sophomore, moving to the starting lineup and recording 47 tackles and 11 sacks. He improved even more as a junior, recording 64 tackles and earned first-team All-Big East honours.
